This lot contains two scarce sets of Hazen loops for use with the M1874 cavalry saber belt. The loops measure approx. 8 1/4" long and 1 1/2" wide and hold 20 cartridges each. They were generally used in conjunction with a Dyer cartridge box to allow each trooper greater firepower. One set of loops is marked “U.S. ARSENAL BENICIA” and the other set of loops is marked “WATERVLIET ARSENAL” with an “A.R. SMITH” inspector’s mark. Together with these fine loops is a McKeever cartridge box with a “US” embossed oval on the front. The rear mount tab is stamped “WATERVLIET ARSENAL”. CONDITION: the Benicia loops show overall light wear, and the Watervliet loops show moderate wear. The McKeever box shows very light wear and is a superior example. PROVENANCE: The Collection of Edward Scott Meadows. (02-22158/BF). $500-750.
