MUSKET. Cal. 58. NSN. Bbl. 40". Dated on top rear 1864 and on top left flat "VP" eagle proof. Records indicate that 255,040 of these rifles were mfg. by Springfield Armory and none by outside contractors. The changes from the 1861 Springfield include a different form of hammer with beveled edge. The clean out screw is eliminated from the cone seat and the ramrod manufactured without the "Swell". The 1863 was further modified to a model known as the Type II which returned to the 3 solid bands retained by band springs as used in this example. Forend does not have ramrod retaining spring. Single leaf folding rear sight graduated to 500 yards. Stud type front sight with center aperture. Lockplate is marked with eagle "U.S. SPRINGFIELD". Lock is dated "1864" at tail. Comb seat has spread winged eagle. Unmarked walnut stock has only an "A" "bored soldier" marking underneath forend. Buttplate is marked "US". Replacement tulip head ramrod. CONDITION: stock has worn original finish with numerous dents and scratches. Notable spots of white paint on left side of butt and deep scratch on both sides of forend behind upper band. Metal has turned overall gray and patina with oxidation and areas of fine pitting. Notable pitting at heel of buttplate. Bore has strong rifling with scattered pitting throughout, plus notable oxidation and wear at muzzle. (01-24449/RW). ANTIQUE. $400-600.
