Overall length: 36 1/2". Blade length: 30 1/2". Blade is etched over 1/2 its length w/ various military, patriotic & foliate motifs including a spread winged American eagle & "U.S.". The etched marking near the ricasso reads, "W.H. Horstmann & Sons PHILADELPHIA". Gilded brass hilt. Guard has pierced foliate decoration as normally seen. Brass wire wrapped sharkskin grip. Gilded brass mounted leather scabbard. There is a white painted ID on the scabbard that reads, "2nd Lt. John P Carswell Co E 25th MAINE Vol. Gary's Great Grandfather". This sword was once owned by noted Civil War collector & dealer, Gary Wilkinson. CONDITION: blade has an overall gray patina & etching remains sharp. Noticeable gilding remains throughout the hilt. Grip is complete but has slightly separated at the seam. Wire is 100%. Scabbard mounts have traces of gilded finish remaining. Leather is generally strong but has a weak spot & partial break below the mid mount. (02-16892/BF). $700-1,100.
