ARMY ARTILLERY MODEL REVOLVER. Cal. 45 Colt. S# 7840. Bbl. 5 1/2". Single Action Army revolver originally mfg. by Colt as a Cavalry Model and later arsenal reworked to an Artillery Model. According to "Colt Cavalry & Artillery Revolvers" 8,000 Cavalry Models were delivered by Colt in lots of 1,000, with this example falling within the Lot 7 according to the frame's S#. The top of the bbl. is marked with Colt's single line address, with Colt's patent information, followed by "U.S." marked on the left side of the frame. Bbl. is marked with "P" inspection proofs, with the trigger guard being marked with an "A", indicating inspection by principle sub-inspector Orville W. Ainsworth. Cyl. exhibits a "D.F.C." (David F. Clark) inspection proof. Frame, hammer, and loading gate exhibit a case color hardened finish, with the bbl., ejector rod housing, cyl., trigger guard, rear grip strap, and frame screws exhibiting a blue finish. Frame is mounted with a 1-piece smooth walnut grip marked "1903" above a boxed "RAC" (Rinaldo A. Carr) cartouche. Standard SAA pattern blade front sight with frame notched rear sight. Bullseye ejector rod head. Revolver is mismatched, as is standard for the Artillery Models. Frame is numbered "7840", trigger guard "10499", rear grip strap "9110", and cyl. "5336". CONDITION: frame, lever, and hammer retain trace amounts of faded case coloring, with the balance fading to a mottle gray patina showing some spots of light pitting. Blued parts retain fair amounts of their arsenal finish, showing areas of wear and thinning overall that shows through to a gray and brown patinas, areas of light to mild surface oxidation, spots/areas of light pitting pitting, as well as some scattered handling marks. Action functions appropriately when cycled by hand. Bore exhibits striations from cleaning and scattered spots of dark moderate pitting, while retaining strong rifling throughout. Grips show some superficial marks from handling and storage, with a small repair present on the left side at the bottom left corner. PROVENANCE: The Esteemed Norm Greenberg Collection. (01-27618/MLW). ANTIQUE. $5,000-8,000.
