Single Action Army Cavalry Model revolver mfg. by Colt under contract for the U.S. government. Top of the bbl. is marked with Colt's single line address, with a "P" proof and "D.F.C." (David F. Clark) inspection proof marked on the underside. Left side of the frame is marked with Colt's 3-line patent information, followed by "U.S.", with a "D.F.C." inspection proof marked above the S# on the underside. Cyl. is marked with a "P" proof and "D.F.C." inspection proof. Frame, hammer, and loading gate's original finish was case color hardened, with remaining components having had a blue finish. Frame is mounted with a 1-piece smooth walnut grip marked "1880" above an oval "CCM" (Charles C. Morrison" cartouche on the left, a boxed "DFC" cartouche on the right, and "D.F.C." marked on the right side of the butt. Right side of grip shows a worn and barely legible inscription that appears to read "PRESENTED TO/ HANDY JACK MILITARY/ BY BILLY THE KID/ RATON NM", with 7 lines carved at the top of the panel towards the frame. Research suggests that this would be John C. Handy, whom served as a surgeon for the U.S. Army and was assigned to Fort Apache, Arizona Territory in 1867. Standard SAA pattern blade front sight with frame notched rear sight. Bullseye ejector rod head. All serialized parts are matching and include the frame, cyl., trigger guard, and rear grip strap. CONDITION: metal components have faded to a dark mottled gray patina, retaining traces of original blue in protected areas, exhibiting some spots of light to mild pitting overall. Bbl. shows mild to moderate pitting around the edges of the muzzle. Cyl. does not rotate when hammer is cocked, and hammer catches twice before full cock. Bore exhibits scattered spots/areas of mild to moderate dark pitting, while retaining strong rifling throughout. Grips show mild wear, with scattered superficial marks and impressions from handling and storage. A desirable D.F.C. inspected Colt Single Action Army revolver, inscribed to "Handy Jack" from Billy the Kid. PROVENANCE: The Esteemed Norm Greenberg Collection. (01-27619/MLW). ANTIQUE. $5,000-8,000.
