REAR ADMIRAL R. L. SHIFLEY. Ralph Louis Shifley was a career U.S. Navy officer who was promoted to the rank of Rear Admiral in 1961 and retired as a Vice Admiral in 1971. He was a highly decorated naval aviator, notably for his service during World War II. Key highlights from his career include: Shifley became a naval aviator in 1937 after graduating from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1933. During World War II, he commanded Bombing Group 8 aboard the USS Bunker Hill, participating in operations against Japanese forces in various locations. He received the Navy Cross for his heroism during the First Battle of the Philippine Sea in June 1944. Following the war, he held several commands, including the attack aircraft carrier USS Franklin D. Roosevelt and Carrier Division Seven. Shifley was promoted to Rear Admiral in 1961 and retired as a Vice Admiral in 1971. Jacket has a letter name tag on the left front w/ the naval aviators wings printed in gold & is lettered "R.L. SHIFLEY / RADM USN". There is a 4" diameter circular patch lettered "COMMANDER CARRIER DIVISION SEVEN". Center of the patch shows the Pacific ocean, a rear admiral flag & "SEVEN" over blue aviators wings. The jacket tag sewn inside at the collar has information including "JACKET, FLYING, MAN'S, TYPE G1 / RALPH EDWARDS SPORTSWARE, N.C. / SIZE 40". Jacket has a circular patch on the back measuring approx. 7" from top to bottom. The patch is marked on top "C.I.C." & at the bottom "CVA 63.". This is the hull number for the aircraft carrier USS Kitty Hawk. The center of the patch shows a sailor carrying a model aircraft carrier under his arm. The jacket has two front pockets w/ button flaps, brown fur collar, zipper front & brown knit cuffs & waist. CONDITION: jacket is in good serviceable condition, but has the wear & flexing expected from a considerable amount of careful use. The knit waist has a small stitched repair in the back.
