SINGLE SHOT MILITARY RIFLE. CAL. 50-70. S# 27231. S# matches on receiver and bbl. Bbl. 32 1/2". Ladder rear sight graduated to 900 yards. Moveable slide is not present. Stud type front sight. Breech block is dated "1870", has the eagle head over crossed arrows, / "U.S.". Beveled lock pipe is dated 1863 & has the spread wing eagle plus "U.S. SPRINGFIELD". 2 Click tumbler. Walnut stock has two clamping bands retained by springs. Ramrod retained by spring & has flat tip. Stock is marked on left panel w/ 4 faint cartouches of which only the "SWP" & "ESA" are legible. No markings are visible behind trigger guard. Buttplate marked "U.S." on tang. Two piece trigger guard. Sling swivels are mounted on the upper band & trigger guard bow. Period black leather sling w/ single hook & 2 sliding keepers marked "ROCK ISLAND". CONDITION: well worn stock w/ numerous handling marks has been cleaned w/ added finish. Notable chip on left side of forend. Sm. chips along ramrod channel. Metal has turned overall gray w/ patina. Fine pitting & numerous handling marks. Bore has strong sharp lands & fine pitting throughout. (01-25348/RW). ANTIQUE. $500-700.
