CONVERSION SINGLE SHOT MUZZLE LOADING PISTOL. Cal. 69. S# NSN. Rnd. 10 1/4" smooth bore bbl. Fixed brass blade on front strap of bbl. band. These pistols were made at Springfield Armory CA 1807-1808 but the production run was not completed. Production was restarted in 1817 & approx. 1,000 guns were completed. This pistol was converted to percussion using a sporting type hammer, drum & nipple. The lockplate w/ rearward extension is marked in front of hammer w/ the "eagle US". Marked vertically behind hammer "SPRINGFIELD 1818". Top of bbl. is dated "1818". Left side of bbl. has "oval P" proof, "eagle head" & "V". Marked inside trigger guard w/ "LA". Double strap bbl. band. Iron furniture. Walnut stock w/ 2 obscured oval inspector marks. Replacement wooden ramrod w/ brass tip. CONDITION: stock has had early refinish w/ slight loss of wood in inletted areas w/ added finish over wear & handling marks. Crack on left side extending from rear of bbl. to top sideplate screw. Metal has extensive wear & handling marks w/ oxidation. Metal appears to have been nickel plated & plating partially removed in an attempt at restoration. Ramrod appears to be vintage replacement. Bore appears worn turning dark w/ oxidation & fine pitting. (01-23051/RW). ANTIQUE. $700-1,100.
