TRAPDOOR SINGLE SHOT MILITARY RIFLE. Cal. 50-70. NSN. Bbl. 36 1/2" to breech face. Approximately 25,000 Model 1863 percussion muskets were altered at Springfield Armory. The original 58 caliber barrel was lined to 50 caliber and chambered for the 50-70 centerfire cartridge. Flip-up rear sight with two apertures. Stud type front sight. Barrel is marked with "G" on the left side below the breech block hinge. Breech block is dated "1866" with eagle head. Bevelled edge lock with two click tumbler. Lockplate is marked "1865" at tail and has eagle in-front of hammer with "U.S. / SPRINGFIELD". Forend with three bands retained by springs. Swivels are carried on the middle band and front of trigger guard bow. Cup tipped ramrod. Buttplate tang marked "U.S.". Left stock panel has illegible acceptance cartouche. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: 17 3/4" fluted blade bayonet marked "U.S." at top rear of blade. Locking clasp is present. Bayonet is turning gray and patina with moderate wear. CONDITION: stock has a well-worn early arsenal rework type finish with a small amount of added finish. Stock has staining and numerous scattered handling marks retaining a good appearance. Metal, originally bright, is turning gray with spots of light oxidation and wear. Bore is shiny with sharp lands and a hint of frosting in the grooves. (01-29121/RW). ANTIQUE. $400-600.
