MILITARY RIFLE. Cal. 50-70. S# 30745. Bbl. 32 1/2". Barrel is marked on the left rear with the serial number adjacent to the receiver serial number. Breech block is marked "1870" as well as the "eagle head" and "U.S.". Breech block has the short 1 7/8" arch. Ladder rear sight with partly legible graduations. Stud type front sight. "1863" dated lockplate with beveled edges. Lockplate is marked with spread wing "eagle", "U.S." and "SPRINGFIELD". Two click tumbler. Forend fastened with two clamping bands which are retained by band springs. Correct single shoulder ramrod with flat tip. Walnut stock. Stock is marked only with very faint and circled script "P" proof under grip. Buttplate tang marked "U.S.". UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: 18" blade socket bayonet with lock ring. Bayonet is marked on top "U.S." with the "S" reversed / "S" / "20" which is likely a rack number. Bayonet has wear and turned gray and patina. Patina is notably heavier on the rear 11" of the bayonet, likely due to storage issues. CONDITION: stock has extensive wear and handling marks. Stock has 1" crack in-front of trigger guard tang and numerous chipping issues notably around lockplate, at toe and at top rear of the left stock panel. Forend has 6" missing chip of wood on left side of barrel between the bands. Metal has turned gray and patina with wear and light oxidation throughout. Bore has lightly frosted appearance and scattered fine pitting while retaining sharp lands. (01-29191/RW). ANTIQUE. $500-900.
