SHOT MILITARY RIFLE. Cal. 50-70. S# 1549. Bbl. 29 1/2". These rifles were mfg. with a thin buttstock, without sling swivels. They may be used with 50-70 rifle cartridges but were intended to be used with a lighter 55 gr. loading. Ladder rear sight graduated to 900 yds. Stud type front sight. High arch bridge block dated 1870 marked with "US" & eagle head. Lockplate & hammer have beveled edges. Lockplate marked with eagle & "US SPRINGFIELD 1864". 2 Position tumbler. Forend with 2 bands retained by springs and manufactured without provision for sling swivels. Ramrod with flat tip, slotted head and retaining swell. Walnut stock is marked only with "67" stamped on left side between lock screws plus marked "56" at top of grip. Narrow buttplate appears unmarked. 2 Piece trigger guard without sling swivel. CONDITION: well worn stock with early arsenal rework type finish has extensive wear, staining and handling marks. Notable chipping edges of buttplate and along ramrod channel. Metal has turned overall gray and patina with light oxidation and fine pitting throughout. Bore has worn lands, scattered light pitting and very slight ring behind front sight. (01-24465/RW).
