BLOCK MILITARY RIFLE. Cal. 50-70. NSN. Bbl. 36". Receiver is marked on right side with "spread wing eagle / U.S. / SPRINGFIELD / 1872". Marked on left side "MODEL 1871". The receiver tang is marked on top "REMINGTONS PATENT / PAT. MAY 3D NOV 15TH 186X APRIL 17TH 1868". These rifles were manufactured at Springfield Armory on a royalty agreement with Remington Arms Company. Approximately 10,000 were produced in the years 1871 & 1872. The breech uses the locking action, which returns the hammer to the half-cock notch when the breech is closed. Originally finished bright with a case colored frame. Walnut stock set. A faint inspector's mark is carried on the right side of the buttstock immediately behind the receiver. Ladder rear sight. Stud type front sight. Buttplate tang marked "U.S.". Forend has two bands retained by springs. Upper band carries sling swivel. Rear swivel mounted in-front of trigger guard. Forend cap is not present. Ramrod is likely a replacement and is not threaded. CONDITION: stock set has well-worn finish with added finish. Notable abrasion on the left forward end of the butt and the grip area. The forend is missing a large portion of the wood above the upper band leaving the ramrod stop exposed, but present. Metal has turned overall gray and patina with wear and handling marks. The barrel has numerous wrench marks in the chamber area and is turned slightly toward the one o'clock position, leaving the index marks unaligned. Bore has prominent rifling with areas of frosting and fine pitting throughout. (01-29123/RW). ANTIQUE. $600-900.
