MILITARY RIFLE. Cal. 45-70. S# 162267. Bbl. 32 1/2". Receiver has 5 pointed star behind S#. Thought to indicate an arsenal replaced receiver. Model 1879 rear sight graduated to 1200 yds. Marked on left side of ladder w/ "R" & has the "B" rolling fire mark. Blade front sight. Low arch breechblock dated 1873. Flat lockplate marked "US SPRINGFIELD" "eagle" dated "1873". 3 position tumbler. Long comb walnut stock. 2 bands retained by springs. Stock is marked on left side w/ boxed "SWP 1889". Encircled script "P" proof under grip. "US" marked buttplate. 1878 type ramrod. CONDITION: original finish stock has the extensive wear & handling marks expected from hard service. Notable loss of finish around buttplate. Lg. extensive missing chips on both sides of receiver tang. Metal turning gray & patina w/ traces of blue w/ spots of light oxidation & fine pitting. Shiny bore w/ sharp lands. Slight darkening in grooves. (01-24305/RW). ANTIQUE. $500-800.
