CAVALRY CARBINE. CAL. 45-70. S# 343554. Bbl. 22". Mfg. 1886. This carbine contains parts both earlier & later than than the receiver mfg. date of 1886. Model 1879 Buckhorn rear sight graduated to 1500 yards. Sight & ladder both marked w/ "C" for carbine use. Slot Less plate screws. Blade front sight. Saddle ring & bar fitted on left side of rifle. Low arch breech block is marked "MODEL / 1873", "eagle head", / "US". Marked on top left over chamber w/ "VP" eagle proof. Flat lockplate w/ spread wing eagle marked "U.S. SPRINGFIELD 1873". 2 Click tumbler. Hammer is marked w/ "C" visible from left side of rifle. Walnut stock has single bbl. band retained by spring. Stock is marked on left side over trigger guard w/ boxed "SWP 1887". Buttplate w/out trap. Buttplate is drilled for cleaning rod. 1 Piece trigger guard. Trigger guard bow w/out swivel. CONDITION: stock set is well worn w/ numerous scratches and handling marks commensurate w/ long hard service but markings remain visible. Metal is worn w/ scattered areas of fine pitting plus retain traces of blue & case colors in protected areas. Bore is shiny w/ strong lands but areas of shallow pitting. (01-25347/RW).
