MILITARY RIFLE. Cal. 45-70. S# 259094. Bbl.32 1/2". Model 1879 rear sight. Sight graduations on ladder are obscure. Sight is marked on left side w/ "R". "B" for "rolling fire". Sight installed w/ friction head screws. Blade front sight. Low arch breechblock. Dated 1878. Flat lockplate marked w/ "US SPRINGFIELD" & "eagle". Three position tumbler. Long comb walnut stock. Stock has faint illegible boxed acceptance mark & faint circled script "P" proof. Butt has stenciled in black on right side "CO", "D" / "10th" / "MSG". Stamped on left side "D" / "10" / "52". "US" marked buttplate. Two piece trigger guard w/ swivel. CONDITION: stock set has moderately worn original finish w/ scattered handling marks throughout. Sm. crack behind receiver tang & on left side between receiver & lock retaining screw. Metal has turned overall gray & patina w/ traces of blue. Breechblock receiver & hammer have notable oxidation & fine pitting. Bore has worn lands turning dark w/ scattered thinning throughout. (01-4303/RW). ANTIQUE. $500-800.
