MILITARY RIFLE. Cal. 45-70. S# 377592. Bbl. 32 1/2". Receiver manufactured in 1887. Model 1879 rear sight graduated to 1,200 yards. Sight base and ladder marked "R". Blade front sight. Barrel marked with "VP" eagle head proof. Low arch breech block dated 1878. Flat lockplate with "U.S. SPRINGFIELD" and "eagle" markings. Three click tumbler. Long comb walnut stock with solid buttplate. Stock has faint illegible boxed acceptance mark on left side. Stock has circular brass plate on top at heel marked "K28". Buttplate is additionally stamped "28". Replacement early type ramrod. Correct brown leather sling marked "ROCK ISLAND ARSENAL" with single brass hook. CONDITION: stock has arsenal rework type finish with light wear and scattered handling marks. Metal has wear, turning gray and patina with scattered small dents and spots of light oxidation. Bore has worn lands turning dark with scattered fine pitting throughout. (01-28939/RW). ANTIQUE. $500-750.
