MILITARY RIFLE. Cal. 45-70. S# 457755. Bbl. 32 1/2". Barrel marked on left rear with "VP" eagle head proof. Receiver produced in 1889. Buffington rear sight marked "R" graduated to 1,400 yards. Windage knob and screw have been modified and do not work correctly. Sight ladder is notably bent. Blade front sight. Low arch breech block dated "1884". Three click tumbler. Lockplate has marked "U.S. / SPRINGFIELD" with eagle. Solid "U.S." marked buttplate. Two-piece trigger guard with grooved trigger. Late type ramrod. Walnut stock is marked with boxed "SWP 1889" and encircled script "P" proof under grip. Correct vintage sling with single brass hook. Sling is in very fragile worn scuffed condition with repairs. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: 17 7/8" fluted blade Model 1873 socket bayonet. Bayonet is marked at top rear "U.S. / s". Blued steel bayonet has its original ring clasp. Blued steel scabbard with leather frog and brass "U.S." marked belt hook. Bayonet retains a large degree of its original blue with light wear. Scabbard is turning gray and patina. Leather has flexing and scuffing. Brass hook is turning patina. CONDITION: stock has a worn thinning original finish with numerous handling marks with small areas and flecks of paint. Small crack at rear of lockplate at rear of breech plug. Metal has traces of blue turning gray and patina with light oxidation. Bore is shiny with strong sharp lands, but has light frosting and scattered very shallow pitting. (01-29126/RW). ANTIQUE. $400-600.
