MILITARY RIFLE. Cal. 45-70. S# 416216. Serial number indicates rifle manufactured in 1888. Bbl. 32 1/2". "VP" eagle head proof on left rear of barrel. Model 1879 rear sight marked "R" graduated to 1,200 yards. Sliding leaf is broken, but remains firmly in-place. Blade front sight. Low arch breech block dated "1884". Flat lockplate has spread wing eagle and "U.S. / SPRINGFIELD". Three click tumbler. Long comb walnut stock. Forend with two bands retained by springs. Correct late type ramrod. Two-piece trigger guard. Buttplate marked with "U.S.". Stock retains traces of its boxed acceptance mark and encircled script "P" proof under grip. CONDITION: stock has an arsenal rework type finish, leaving wear, staining and handling marks throughout. Notable crack behind breech plug tang extending downward to tail of lockplate. Metal has an arsenal rework blue finish with wear and areas of light oxidation. Hammer has notable tool marks on the outside. Fair worn bore with fine pitting throughout.
