MILITARY RIFLE. Cal. 45-70. S# 459493. Rifle manufactured in 1889. Bbl. 32 1/2". Barrel has "VP" eagle proof at left rear. Buffington "R" marked rear sight. Sight has been slightly distorted, but remains serviceable. Front sight blade is Lyman 26 NA bead type. 1884 dated breech block. Flat lockplate with spread wing eagle marked "U.S. SPRINGFIELD". Three click tumbler. Solid type buttplate. Walnut stock. Stock has legible "SWP 1889" acceptance mark and encircled "P" proof under grip. Stock has been checkered in the vintage fashion with flat topped diamonds. Checkering is present on both sides of grip and underneath rear of forend. Buttstock is marked on the right side with large scroll "MMA" neatly inscribed. Forend with two bands retained by springs. Ramrod is not present. CONDITION: stock has tiny cracks at front and rear of lockplate. Grip has light finish damage and two filled screw holes from the former placement of a tang sight. Stock finish under grip is marred on both sides of trigger guard tang likely from metal pistol grip. Metal has moderate wear, turning gray and patina. Breech block shows traces of original case colors. Very good shiny bore with sharp lands. (01-29407/RW). ANTIQUE. $400-600.
