SINGLE SHOT RIFLE. Cal. 45-70. S# 546986. Bbl. 32 1/2". Barrel has the standard "VP / eagle head" proofs at left rear. Rifle manufactured in 1892. Buffington rear sight graduated to 1,400 yards marked "R" on top right corner of slide. Clamping screw is not present in sight slide. Blade front sight. Breechblock dated "1884". Aluminum-Bronze alloy firing pin. Three click tumbler. Lockplate marked with spread wing eagle and "US / SPRINGFIELD". Rifle is equipped with the rod bayonet. The bayonet measures 35 1/2" overall. Walnut stock marked only with inscribed "36 / 91" on right side of butt. Stock retained with two barrel bands. Upper band carries stacking and sling swivels. One piece trigger guard with sling swivel. "US" marked trap buttplate. CONDITION: stock has moderate wear, scratches and handling marks throughout. Arsenal rework finish has rendered the acceptance mark illegible and the encircled "P" proof is very faint. Worn metal has turned overall gray and patina with light oxidation. Bore has frosted appearance with areas of fine pitting. Lands remain strong and sharp. PROVENANCE: Estate Collection of Nicholas Apergis. (01-27464/RW). ANTIQUE. $600-900.
