SINGLE SHOT MILITARY RIFLE. Cal. 45-70. S# 559114. Bbl. 32 1/4". Barrel is marked with "VP" eagle head proof on left rear. Buffington rear sight marked "R". Blade front sight. Front sight has been equipped with a carbine type sight protector. Low arch breech block dated 1884. Flat lockplate with "spread wing eagle" and "U.S. SPRINGFIELD". Two click tumbler is likely a replacement, as the three click type was standard in these rifles. Rod bayonet catch does not release properly, bayonet is not readily removed. One piece trigger guard. U.S. marked buttplate with swinging door. Walnut stock with faint illegible acceptance mark on left side & faint encircled "P" proof under grip. Forend with two bands retained by springs. Correct brown leather sling marked "ROCK ISLAND / ARSENAL / EMS". Single brass hook. Sling has the professional extended repair which was done at arsenals to converve leather. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: combination tool with screwdriver is marked "U.S. / MOD 1879" and correct type shell extractor. CONDITION: stock has an arsenal rework type finish with wear and staining. There are notable cracks on both sides in the grip area and a repair with replaced wood in the area of the upper band and above the band spring. Metal has turned overall gray and patina with wear, oxidation and scattered light pitting. Bore has strong lands with frosting and light pitting throughout. (01-28943/RW). ANTIQUE. $400-600.
