SINGLE SHOT MILITARY RIFLE. Cal. 45-70. S# 522084. Bbl. 32 1/2". Rifle manufactured in 1891. Barrel marked on left rear with "VP" eagle head proof. "R" marked Buffington rear sight. Blade front sight. Three position tumbler. Sear does not always position itself correctly. 1878 dated low arch breech block. Note, firing pin is frozen in forward position and needs gunsmith attention as does the lock before any attempted use. One piece trigger guard. Buttplate tang marked "U.S.", "D / 7". Ramrod bayonet measures 35 1/2". Threaded at rear. Walnut stock. Stock has faint "SWP 1891" cartouche and encircled "P" proof. Forend with two bands retained by springs. CONDITION: stock has a worn arsenal rework finish with staining and numerous handling marks. Metal has turned overall patina with wear, light oxidation, staining and pitting. Ramrod bayonet is bent at its lower end, but is readily removed from rifle. Bore has strong sharp lands. Scattered fine pitting, frosting and areas of dried grease. (01-28784/RW). ANTIQUE. $350-550.
