SINGLE SHOT MILITARY RIFLE. CAL. 45-70. S# 540405. Bbl. 32". Buffington ladder rear sight, marked "R" at the top of the ladder. Blade front sight. The Model 1888 rifles were the first to be fitted with rod bayonets for general issue. Breech block is marked on top "U.S. / MODEL / 1884". Bbl. is marked over the chamber with "A", "VP", and eagle head proof. Flat lockplate with "spread wing eagle" and "US SPRINGFIELD". Three-click tumbler. Rod bayonet measures 35 1/2" overall. Walnut stock with two bbl. bands. Stock is marked on the left side over the trigger guard with the boxed "SWP 1892". Faintly encircled script "P" proof under the grip. One-piece trigger guard. Trap buttplate. Stock is marked at the rear of the comb "38F" and on the right rear of the butt "69 /109". CONDITION: stock has an added dark finish over the original, leaving visible markings. Finish is well worn, with flaking, scratches, and handling marks. Metal is turning overall gray and patina with traces of blue and areas of light oxidation. Buffington sight has a damaged battle sight notch. Very good, shiny bore with sharp lands. (01-25201 /RW). ANTIQUE. $400-600.
