MILITARY RIFLE. Cal. 45-70. S# 516658. Receiver manufactured in 1891. Bbl. 32 1/2". Barrel marked on left rear with "VP" eagle proof. Buffington rear sight marked "R". Original front sight blade replaced with Lyman 26UA with white bead. The rod bayonet Springfield was produced as an improvement over previous models by replacing the ramrod with a combination bayonet and cleaning rod. The ramrod bayonet was not well-liked in service. Low arch 1884 dated breech block. Flat lockplate with the "U.S. SPRINGFIELD" and "eagle" markings. 3 click tumbler. Walnut stock has crisp boxed "SWP 1891" acceptance mark and encircled script "P" proof under grip. One piece trigger guard. Blued steel rod bayonet threaded on the small end, measures 35 1/2". CONDITION: stock has moderately worn original finish with scattered handling marks throughout. Metal turning gray and patina, retains 40% of its original blue with scattered spots of light oxidation. Bore has strong lands with lightly frosted grooves. PROVENANCE: Estate of Groves Herrick. (01-28373/RW). ANTIQUE. $500-900.
