MILITARY RIFLE. Cal. 45-70. S# 555813. Bbl. 32 1/2". Barrel is marked on left rear with "VP" eagle head proof. "R" marked Buffington rear sight graduated to 1,400 yards. Blade front sight. Tall replacement blade. 1884 dated breech block. Aluminum-bronze firing pin. Three click tumbler. Flat lockplate has spread wing eagle as well as "U.S. SPRINGFIELD". Serial number indicates manufacture date of "1892". Rod bayonet threaded at lower end. Bayonet measures 35 1/2" overall. One piece trigger guard. Buttplate with trap is marked "U.S." and "2 / 6". Walnut stock has legible boxed "SWP / 1892" acceptance mark. Buttstock is marked on right rear "2 / 6". Encircled script "P" proof is faint. CONDITION: the stock has a worn original finish with numerous handling marks. Notable dent on the bottom right of the forend. Metal retains traces of blue turning patina. Breech block retains traces of its original case colors. Bore is shiny with strong, sharp lands. (01-29148/RW). ANTIQUE. $600-900.
