MILITARY RIFLE. Cal. 45-70. S# 542693. Bbl. 32 1/2". Rifle receiver manufactured in 1892. Buffington rear sight graduated to 2,000 yards. Sight ladder is marked "R". Blade front sight. Replacement blade appears to be from O3-A3 Springfield. Barrel has "VP" proofs. Breech block dated 1884. Flat lockplate with "U.S. SPRINGFIELD" and "eagle". Three click tumbler. The rod bayonet, 35 9/16" long, has the double locking shoulders which differs from the earlier 1884 Model. Two barrel bands retained by springs. Walnut stock with boxed "SWP 1892" acceptance mark on left side. Encircled script "P" proof under grip. Number "275"(rack number) appears on the left rear of the butt. One piece trigger guard. CONDITION: stock has moderate wear and handling marks retaining most of its original finish. There are two notable areas on the right side of the buttstock and left side of the forend resembling the initial cuts from a checkering tool. There are two notable circular marks on each side of the receiver ring and the forend, likely from some holding fixture. Metal retains 60% of its worn thinning original blue with spots of very light oxidation. Breech block and receiver show faint case colors and spots of oxidation. Bore has spots of light frosting, but retains a good degree of shine with sharp lands. (01-28734/RW). ANTIQUE. $500-800.
