MILITARY RIFLE. Cal. 45-70. NSN. Bbl. 32 1/2". Barrel is marked with the "VP" eagle head proofs on the left rear. Model 1879 ladder rear sight marked "R" graduated to 1,200 yards. Stud type front sight without separate pinned blade. 1873 high arch breech block. Three click tumbler. Flat lockplate is marked only "1884" below the thumb-latch. Long comb walnut stock. Stock is marked on left side with boxed "ESA" and encircled "P" proof under grip. Cylindrical rod bayonet mounted under barrel. Bayonet is not readily removed. Forend with two bands retained by springs. Buttplate without trapdoor is marked on tang with "U.S." and "30", which also appears above buttstock. Two-piece trigger guard. Smooth trigger. CONDITION: firing pin tip is missing. Stock has a worn appearance with numerous handling marks and scratches. Wide ramrod channel has long missing chip. Notable small chips missing at toe. Metal has turned overall gray and patina with oxidation and areas of fine pitting. Ramrod has notably more blue finish. Bore has strong sharp lands with scattered very fine pitting and slightly frosted appearance. PROVENANCE: From the Lifetime Collection of Malcolm Zickler, Ret. USAF Lt. Col. (01-28976/RW).
