MILITARY RIFLE. Cal. 45-70. S# 512685. Bbl. 32 1/2". Receiver manufactured in 1891 which agrees with the boxed "SWP 1891" inspector's mark on the side of the buttstock. The rifle is known as the rod bayonet Springfield, whereby the ramrod was replaced by a combination cleaning rod and bayonet mounted in the forend. Buffington rear sight is marked "R". Blade front sight. Barrel has the "VP" eagle proof on the left rear. Low arch breech block dated 1884. Hammer with late type checkering. Three click tumbler. Flat lockplate marked with eagle and "U.S. SPRINGFIELD". Blued steel ramrod bayonet measures 35 1/2" overall. Walnut stock with long comb. Stock marked with "SWP 1891" inspector's mark, encircled script "P" proof under grip and faint "bored soldier" initials on left side of butt. Trap type buttplate for cleaning rod. One piece trigger guard. CONDITION: stock has worn original finish darkened through long storage with numerous handling marks. Metal turning gray and patina retains traces of original blue in protected areas with scattered spots of light oxidation throughout. Bore has lightly worn lands with frosted grooves and small areas of fine pitting. (01-28307/RW). ANTIQUE. $500-800.
