MILITARY RIFLE POSSIBLY USED BY CO. G 40TH U.S.V. IN PHILIPPINE INSURRECTION. Cal. 30-40 Krag. S# 217567. Bbl. 30". Model 1901 Ladder rear sight w/ windage adjustment. Blade front sight. Walnut stock and handguard. Stock has encircled script "P" and "32" assembly number under grip. Stock has an added marking on the left rear of butt the outline resembles a leaf and it encloses "US and 8". UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: 11 3/4" fullered blade Krag bayonet dated on left ricasso "1898" and marked "US" on the right. Smooth walnut grips. Steel scabbard with wire belt attachment. Bayonet blade has scattered areas of light oxidation and very light pitting. Balance of metal turning gray and patina. Grips have light wear and staining. Blued scabbard turning patina with small dents. Consignor supplied document containing information from Springfield Research Service: "Serial Numbers of U.S. Martial Arms. Vol. 2" (pg. 75) stating that these rifles serial # falls within the range of a block of rifles sent to Co. G 40th U.S. Volunteers (Kansas) in 1899. The 40th U.S. Volunteers served in the Southern Philippines. "During the Spanish-American War, U.S. forces in the Philippines and Filipino forces led by revolutionary leader Emilio Aguinaldo had a common enemy in Spain. As hostilities came to a close the United States emerged from the war victorious. As a result of the Treaty of Paris, December 10,1898, the United States gained the Philippines as a U.S. territory. Approximately 125,000 troops served in the Philippines during the war. After more than three years of fighting, at a cost of 400 million dollars and approximately 4,200 American dead and 2,900 wounded, President Theodore Roosevelt proclaimed an end to the insurrection in the Philippines on July 4, 1902." CONDITION: Arsenal replacement stock has a nice appearance with crisp proof, light wear and small scattered handling marks. Metal has 60% of its original blue with thinning, wear, and scattered spots of light oxidation throughout. Action area has added varnish like protective finish.
