SINGLE SHOT MILITARY RIFLE. Cal. 50-70. S# 18677 (matches on receiver & bbl.). Bbl. 32 5/8". Ladder rear sight graduated to 900 yds. Original front sight has been replaced w/ a brass bead type attached w/ solder. Breech block date 1869 marked w/ "U.S." and "eagle head". Beveled lockplate & hammer. Lockplate dated 1863 is marked w/ "U.S. SPRINGFIELD" & "eagle". Two position tumbler. Rifle has 2 bands retained by springs. Upper band & trigger guard equipped w/ swivels. Flat tip ramrod w/ retaining swell. Walnut stock is unmarked. Buttplate marked "U.S.". 2 piece trigger guard w/ smooth trigger. CONDITION: stock is likely early replacement retaining its well worn original finish w/ moderate staining & handling marks. 2 notable cracks on left side of receiver tang plus slight chipping behind receiver tang, ramrod channel & buttplate toe. Metal is well worn turning gray & patina w/ light oxidation & fine pitting throughout. Bore has strong lands turning dark w/ scattered pitting throughout. (01-24301/RW). ANTIQUE. $400-600.
