MILITARY RIFLE. Cal. 30-06S# 1193442. Bbl. 24". Bbl. marked behind front sight flaming bomb "SA 2-20". Ladder rear sight w/ volley notch. Graduated to 2850 yards. Flat windage & elevation knobs. Blade front sight. These interesting rifles were mfg. to be used w/ the Pedersen Device which gave the soldier a high degree of close range semi auto fire power using a pistol type cartridge & a mag. capacity of 40 rds. The device was quickly interchanged w/ the original bolt allowing use w/ either the 30-06 or .30 Pedersen ammunition as need arose. Modifications which were made to the standard Model 1903 rifles during manufacture at Springfield Armory included the receivers markings “U.S. SPRINGFIELD ARMORY MODEL 1903 MARK I”. An ejection port was added to the left receiver rail w/ a corresponding shallow cut made in the left side of the stock. The mag. cutoff was given an extra notch to lock the device into the rifle. The original cutoff retaining pin had a screw driver slot however this rifle is now equipped w/ the standard pin. The trigger has an unusual double pawl design. This rifle retains these features w/ the exception of the cutoff retaining pin. The smooth bolt has a straight down handle, single gas port & is marked underneath handle w/ “B” “H” & “?”. Bolt shroud & safety marked “R”. The receiver ring is correctly marked & has gas escape hole on right side. All milled furniture including fine checkered buttplate. Walnut stock set with correct ejection port cut out. Buttstock is marked on the left side over trigger guard with a boxed "AAHI" indicating an arsenal overhaul at the Augusta, Georgia arsenal. Marked underneath the grip with two circle "P" proofs one of which is encircled. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: original khaki web pouch marked "R.I.A. 9-19" pouch has "lift the dot" fastener & Model 910 belt hook. Pouch is divided into 5 compartments. Pouch is in very good condition exhibiting only storage wear. Brass oiler in butt. CONDITION: stock set has moderately worn arsenal rework finish w/ staining, wear & handling marks. Sm. crack behind receiver tang. Forend has notable scratches underneath due to improper band removal. Metal retains 75% original parkerized finish w/ light wear & scratches. Bore has good degree of shine w/ worn lands & scattered pitting ahead of chamber. PROVENANCE: Dr. Fred Novy collection. (23-157/RW). CURIO. $1,500-2,000.
