FIGHTING KNIFE MADE AT FORT KNOX, KY, WITH SCABBARD. Fighting knife mfg. by Taylor Huff at Fort Knox, KY during World War II. This variation is listed as the No. 2 in "The Best of U.S. Military Fighting Knives Bayonets & Machetes", by M.H. Cole. Dagger type blade measures 9" from the point to the bottom of the ricasso, with an overall length of 13 3/4". Handle is comprised of 2 smooth wood grip scales, which feature inlaid brass plaques at the center of the panels. Right scale features a brass inlaid plaque that is hand stamped "MADE. AT./ FORT. KNOX. KY.". Large knuckle bow, featuring 5 spiked flanges on either side. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: brown leather scabbard, carved "GEOrgE" above some indiscernible text, featuring several star shaped stamped embellishments. CONDITION: metal components retain a gray patina, with scattered areas of age related discoloration present overall. Blade shows signs of sharpening at and around the tip, with scattered spots of dark oxidation, as well as some nicks and chips to the blade faces. Grip scales show some scattered marks and minor impressions from handling and storage, with the right panel exhibiting some minor surface level chipping around the right edges of the brass plaque. Scabbard remains malleable, exhibiting wear, some age related cracking, as well as some areas (primarily on the rear) of crazing. Scabbard exhibits tearing on either edge of the throat, as well as losses to the stitching along the upper half that have been reinforced with brass and aluminum eyelets. (02-24398/MLW). $800-1,200.
