Cal. 50. NSN. Bbl. 23" full oct. rifled marked "N. KENDALL / WINDSOR VT / PATENT". The bbl. tang is marked "SMITH'S / IMPROVED / PATENT / STUD / LOCK". Brass cap box in stock & a brass trigger guard & buttplate. The 6" iron bbl. tang is engraved. Kendall was born in 1807 in West Windsor VT & died December 24, 1861 in Windsor, VT. He was a blacksmith, gunsmith & gunmaker. Kendall worked in a shop adjacent to the prison at Windsor. The shop at the new prison built in 1831 was by 1835 equipped w/ a modern steam engine, & the prisoners were put to work on the rifles of N. Kendall under a contract negotiated w/ the superintendent. Although Kendall did not invent the underhammer rifle. He, & later David Hilliard of Cornish, NH, built mostly this type. CONDITION: fine & original throughout, but the ramrod is missing.
