SEMI-AUTOMATIC PISTOL WITH BOX & SPARE MAGAZINE. Cal. 45 ACP. S# 1080656. Bbl. 5". The U.S. Switch & Signal is a key pistol for U.S. Martial collectors, with 55,000 having been made during 1943 in the serial range of 1,041,405-1,096,404. This entirely original example is a standard configuration pistol, finished in a Du-Lite blue over major major parts, with its small parts blue or blued or sandblast finish. The left side of the slide is marked with the "USS" logo, followed by the company address and its location in PA. The right side of the frame is marked "UNITED STATES PROPERTY" and "M1911 A1 U.S. ARMY/ No 1080656". Inspection marks include the usual "P" on top of the slide and on the left side of the frame, and the encircled inspector "R.C.D." acceptance just below the slide stop. Unlike the majority of 1911A1s, the Union Switch & Signal was not marked with an ordnance proof. Fitted with a correct brown plastic grips with the circular grip screw reinforcements (Type 10) and 2 standard blued mags., each having 5 indicator holes and a "L" proof on the toe. Disassembly shows a correct Hi Standard bbl. with a "P" proof on the left side of the lug and a "HS" marking on the right side of the lug. MAGS: 2 7-rd. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: craft box containing spare mag. CONDITION: very good plus original finish, approximately 85%, with sharp edge wear and generalized thinning, as one might expect from a service pistol that saw moderate use during the latter half of WWII. Same concerns apply to the grips and each of the mags. Bright bore, light etching, with sharp rifling. Correct manual mechanics. One of the more sought after 1911s, a no excuse gun, sure to please any serious collector of U.S. service pistols. (24-1528/LMA). CURIO. $4,500-7,500.
