SHEFFIELD BOWIE KNIFE. 14.5” overall, 9.5” clip point blade etched with rendition of the Crystal Palace Exhibition Hall and above: AMERICA / NEW YORK EXHIBITION 1852”. Extra long 5” delicate tapered clip, stamped on ricasso “SUPBURB / W SHIPMAN / SHEFFIELD”. Leather sheath with German silver mounts, short belt hook attached to throat, stag grip with German silver pommel. this knife as pictured on page 416 of Norm Flayderman’s “THE BOWIE KNIFE”. CONDITION: very good overall, blade decoration was lightly etched, but all discernible, leather scabbard body, creased and redyed black. PROVENANCE: From the Lifelong Collection of Glen E. Mattox.
