14” Overall. 9” Unmarked 2 1/2" clip point blade w/ beveled top edge. 2 1/4” Figural cross guard w/ pointed ends. Tapered oct. solid iron grip w/ rnd. solid iron ferrule. This is a most unusual & aesthetically pleasing knife that required a lot of skill & appears very possibly to be early American. There is nothing else like it that I am aware of, but blade form is very reminiscent of one Civil War era Richmond, VA maker, though knife could easily be 1840s. This knife was last in the late George Jackson collection of fine bowies. PROVENANCE: ex-collection of Robert Vines. CONDITION: very good overall & appears “as found” w/ overall mostly smooth iron patina w/ scattered stains & pitting. PROVENANCE: From the Robert Vines Collection. (02-15314-5/JS). $1,200-1,800.
