TALL CLOCK BY DORIS BASKUM. Probably New York State, last quarter of 19th century. The case is poplar and the bonnet has a nice molded cornice. The astragal door opens to a painted wood arched dial with Roman numeral chaptering centering a brass rondel stamped with floral vinery. The hand painted wood dial is decorated with flowering sprigs in the corners and is surmounted by a nicely painted harbor scene in the arch. The brass works are time and strike with a chain winder. The throat of the case is fitted with a panel door that is profusely carved with dogwood floral sprays in a very artistic and realistic manner. The door is mounted with cast brass hinges. The clock has a box base with molding and rests on a molded plinth. This clock has a very interesting provenance. It originated in the Ticonderoga, New York of the Baskum family. The door apparently was carved by Miss Doris Baskum and displays her artistry at carving for which she actually won a prize at the Women’s Pavilion at the Chicago’s World Fair of 1893. This door was purported to have been added to the clock case some time after 1893, but before 1897. This clock was then passed on to Dr. & Mrs. Isaac Sharon and in 1961 was purchased by Bartley L. Larson, Sr., then on to the current owner. SIZE: Overall 97" h. Throat is 12 3/4" w. Overall 9 1/2" d. CONDITION: case has an old dark crackled finish, which is original and all with a red wash. (05-250/JJ). $800-1,200.
