MOUNTED GENERAL OFFICER PRESENTATION SWORD. 42" Overall, 33” Damascus and gold etched blade. This is the highest grade Horstmann sword I have seen. “W. H. Horstmann / & Sons / Philadelphia” etched on ricasso. Massive gold washed brass hilt has piercings and high relief Victorian decoration throughout. The use of silver and gold contrasts on hilt and scabbard and the diamond eyes of the cherub quillon tell who ever sees it that an important person owns it. This unique one-of-a-kind specially made sword has lost its history since the war, but only an important individual could have it as price was very high. It was not uncommon to see entire companies or regiments of hundreds of subscribers make contributions to buy such a luxury item for a beloved commander. CONDITION: fine overall, sword retains most of its bright gold wash, blade has all its gold and Damascus design. (02-17548/JS). $20,000-30,000.
