BARREL. Cal. 36. S# 170234. Colt model 1851 navy revolver with 7.5" round barrel variation is mentioned in Nathan Swayze's definitive 1967 text "51 COLT NAVIES" in serial range 174,000-186,000. The barrel address is unique in being marked in 2 lines with "ADDRESS SAML COLT NEW-YORK U.S. AMERICA". The few specimens noted are outliers and have always been controversial. This example appears original and matching throughout. Swayze refers to this variation as the "rarest of the rare". Dick Salzer past publisher of Arms Heritage Magazine and noted Colt authority owned this gun and has no qualms about its authenticity. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: letter of authenticity by Dick Salzer, copy of pages 55-56 from Swayze's Colt Navy text. CONDITION: very good overall, traces of finish on hammer & trigger, balance of revolver is gray patina, barrel & cylinder appear recolored. Matching SNs throughout, wedge number is slightly different font. Mechanically functional, crisp rifled bore. ANTIQUE. (01-25117/JS). $6,000-8,000.
