IRONCLAD MONITOR “DICTATOR”. About 2.5” diameter, 1” thick “hockey puck” shaped glass w/ old pasted tag: “Ericson’s U. S. Civil War Monitor, Dictator Glass Deck Light-- Valuable Rare Relic”. These small heavy glass “windows” mounted in deck allowed light to pass to lower decks where sailors worked. USS Dictator was launched December 26, 1863. Had a crew of 174 men, 11 officers. 312 feet long, 50 feet wide & displaced 4500 tons. Armed w/ the 2 largest Civil War cannon made at the time. 15" Dahlgrens. Dictator served w/ the North Atlantic blockading squadron till the end of the Civil War. After the war, she was part of the North Atlantic Fleet being decommissioned in 1877 & finally scrapped in 1883 when this unique souvenir was most likely taken. CONDITION: very good to fine, glass shows typical flaws of the era. Pasted typed label is soiled and scuffed & mostly discernible. (02-14876/JS). $400-500.
