PATTERN MUSKET. Cal. 71. NSN. 59” overall, 44.75” barrel, totally unmarked other than small set of 3 punch dots on some lock components, barrel has deep pair of cartouches on bottom “SH”. No external markings. Stock is walnut with couple burls that would never have passed most countries military inspection, but in early America, this was fine. This musket conforms to every qualification George Moller gives for 1795-1798 Springfield production, could the “SH” barrel cartouche be the Samuel Hodgdon that Moller mentions as barrel contractor for the early Springfield Armory? This is “attic condition” musket of Charleville pattern 1766 that America adopted as their first military longarm that has American attributes. CONDITION: very good, “as found” complete and original missing ramrod and sling swivels. Stock is sound with age cracks in butt, Good mechanics and clean clear bore. (01-21758/JS). ANTIQUE. $2,750-4,000.
