Cal. 53. NSN. 44 5/8" Swamped octagon bbl. holding U notch rear & German silver blade front sights is unmarked. Trade type lock w/ serpentine cock, waterproof pan, bridled roller frizzen & feather spring w/ bulbous finial is unmarked. Rifle is fitted w/ dbl. set triggers. Simple walnut stock extends to muzzle w/ 1" brass cap & is pinned to bbl. Stock is iron mounted w/ deep crescent buttplate & 6" iron return, a long extension of bbl. tang over comb for strengthening & a blacksmith made trigger guard w/ finger spur. A hickory ramrod is held by 2 sheet iron pipes & matching thimble which extends for 7" along bottom of stock. Stock features hollowed out grease cup on right side of butt & rudimentary sm. cheekpiece on left. Toeline is cut w/ 7 longitudinal notches. Left side under cheekpiece is carved "M" & w/ some other indecipherable letters, possibly a name. CONDITION: fair to good. All iron parts w/ dark relatively smooth patina. Stock w/ old oil finish has hand worn highlights from carrying. Lock will not cock. Triggers will not set. Bore is fair to good w/ strong rifling, considerably pitted. (01-20332/MGM).
