3’ x 4’ double applique embroidered on ultramarine blue field and features the unit’s crest surmounted by the Air Force eagle and the thirteen white stars, gold fringe, Philadelphia QM label not dated. Unit only active in Air Force 1947-1955. This command was first activated in 1944 at Robins Field in Georgia as the 566th Air Service Group. Within this command was an Air Engineering squadron to handle any maintenance as well as a Air Material Squadron for supply issues. The unit also had a Headquarters and Base Services squadron. Before the unit could be deployed overseas it was inactivated and finally disbanded in 1948.
With the coming of the Cold War, the command was reconstituted at Hamilton Air Force base in California with the new designation 566th Air Base Group. The task of the command was similar to its antecedent organization; base supply and aircraft maintenance and support. Eight squadrons were under its auspices at the time. Eventually the command was redesignated as the 566th Air Defense Group and given the task of defending Northern California air space. The fighters under its control were radar and air missile equipped for Continental Air Defense. In August 1955, the 566th was inactivated and its place at Hamilton Air Force Base taken by the 78th Fighter Group (Air Defense). The flag’s color is Ultramarine Blue reflecting its legacy from the U.S. Army Air Corps days. Above the regimental crest is the Eagle in a cloud which is found on flags of the U.S. Air Force and the central device is surmounted by 13 white stars, an homage to the Thirteen Colonies. The flag dates from the 566th’s time of service after becoming part of the Air Force between 1947 and 1955. CONDITION: fine. (02-19473-25/JS). $200-300.
