3’ x 4’ double applique embroidered on ultramarine blue field and features the unit’s crest surmounted by the Air Force eagle and the thirteen white stars, gold fringe, dated Sept. 30, 1958 label in sleeve. The 585th was not a flying component of the U.S. Air Force but was instead a command that handled surface launched cruise missiles. Activated in September 1956 at the U.S Air Base in Bitburg, West Germany, the command supervised the 1st Tactical Missile Squadron. That squadron, which began in 1955, was the first operational cruise missile unit.
At the time both Army Aviation and the Air Force worked on surface to air and surface to surface missiles. The 585th used the TM-61 Matador cruise missiles as it weapons system while posted in Germany. The 585th was deactivated in September 1962. CONDITION: fine. (02-19473-13/JS). $300-400.
