OF THE 2nd CAVALRY. A fine & seldom encountered, full-sized cavalry guidon measuring approx. 31 1/2" at the points, and 22” at the center. The height of the guidon is approx. 27”. The top half is red with a large central sewn “2”. The lower half of the guidon is white with a large sewn “E”. The 2nd US Cavalry was exceptionally active in the West during the Indian Wars era. They served in nearly all corners of the Western theater. Most notably, on 17 March 1876, Company E was part of a regiment under Colonel Joseph Reynolds engaged the Cheyenne & Lakota during the ill-fated Big Horn Expedition. Company E participated in the Battle of Powder River, as well as the Battle of Rosebud on 17 June 1876. A few days after Rosebud, Custer’s 7th Cavalry was annihilated at the Battle of Little Bighorn. The guidon is housed in a 3” deep frame measuring 33 3/4" x 35 3/4". CONDITION: the guidon shows scattered losses & separations, but remains substantially solid. Colors are vivid, and the display factor is extraordinary. (02-20185/BF). $2,000-3,000.
