MODEL 1861 MILITARY SINGLE-SHOT RIFLED MUSKET. Cal. 58. NSN. Bbl. 40". Approx. 50,000 of these rifles made in Windsor, Vermont were delivered to the United States government between 1861 & 1864. Bevelled lockplate is marked "1863" at the tail & "spread wing eagle / US / L.G-&Y / WINDSOR-VT.". Bbl. is dated on top of breech "1863". "VP / eagle head" proof is found on left side of breech. Breech plug tang has "33". Flip type rear sight graduated to 500 yards. Stud type front sight. No cleanout screw is provided. Buttplate is marked "US". Tulip-shaped ramrod w/ dished face. Walnut stock marked on left panel w/ legible acceptance cartouche. Forend held by three clamping bands. The sling swivels are carried on the middle band & trigger guard bow. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: 18" triangular blade socket bayonet marked "US" on the face. S# is "4012" on neck. Clasp is present. Bayonet has traces of original bright finish turning an overall worn gray & patina. CONDITION: well-worn stock has original finish w/ the wear & handling marks expected from long service. Notable 2" cracks ahead of & behind lockplate. Lockplate does not seat fully at the rear. Metal has turned overall patina w/ light oxidation & fine shallow pitting throughout. Bore is dark w/ a worn oxidized appearance, but lands are still prominently visible. (01-26340/RW). ANTIQUE. $500-800.
