TURNER RIFLE.
An excellent example of a rare “Bahn Frei” bayonet measuring 24 3/4" overall with a 19 1/2" blade. The flat blade has a 10 3/4" simulated false edge. The brass hilt has an S shaped guard with the words “BAHN FREI” on one side of the horizontally reeded grip. The other side of the grip has the slide and locking spring for attachment to the Turner rifle. Just above the slide is the serial number “16”. Leather scabbard with no mounts attached. The Turners were German immigrants that served with great distinction during The Civil War. The most famous Turner regiments were the 9th Ohio & 17th Missouri. The bayonet was issued with the Turner rifle that generally fired a bullet between 42 Cal. & 45 Cal. CONDITION: blade has a gray patina with scattered staining. The hilt has a rich mustard patina. The scabbard leather is quite solid but a bit flaked. The scabbard has no mounts or frog attached. PROVENANCE: From the Lifelong Collection of Glen E. Mattox. (02-18332/BF). $1,500-2,000.
