RIFLED MUSKET. Cal. 58. NSN. Bbl. 40". Two leaf folding sight graduated to 500 yards. Stud type front sight enhanced w/ red. Barrel marked on top "1863" & on left w/ "VP" eagle's head proof. Bolster made w/o screw has spread wing eagle. Bevelled lockplate. w/ 1863 hammer. Lockplate as the spread wing eagle & "U.S. / SPRINGFIELD" dated "1863". Buttplate marked "US". Walnut stock. Forend w/ three split bands. Smooth tulip head ramrod. Stock is marked on left panel w/ faint inspector's cartouche. CONDITION: stock has been cleaned, leaving light wear, slight loss of wood & numerous handling marks. Small crack at rear of lockplate & behind front lock screw on left side. Metal has been cleaned bright, leaving wear, handling marks & scattered small spots of fine pitting. Bore has strong lands, but dark frosted appearance. (01-26578/RW). ANTIQUE. $300-500.
