SHOT MILITARY RIFLE. Cal. 45-70. S# 173020. Bbl. 32 1/2". Receiver mfg. in 1882. Breech block is marked "MODEL 1873 / eagle head w/ crossed arrows / US". Bbl. has "VP / eagle head" proofs. Steel firing pin w/ return spring. Model 1879 open rear sight marked "R". Sight graduated to 1,200 yards & is attached w/ slotless screws. Blade front sight. Flat lockplate w/ eagle & "US SPRINGFIELD". Three click tumbler. Long comb walnut stock w/ legible boxed "SWP / 1887 / encircled script P" proof. Two piece trigger guard. Forend has two bands retained by springs. Late type steel cleaning rod. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: 18" triangular blade Model 1873 bayonet marked "US" on the face. Locking ring is present. Bayonet has traces of blue turning patina w/ moderate wear & spots of oxidation throughout. CONDITION: stock has worn original finish w/ the numerous handling marks commensurate w/ long service. Metal retains much original blue w/ wear, turning patina & w/ scattered spots of light oxidation. Lower band is mostly patina. Upper band has worn blue. Bore is bright w/ strong lands. Bore has areas of frosting & fine scratches. (01-26341/RW). ANTIQUE. $500-750.
