MILITARY CARBINE. Cal. 45-70. S# 381978. Bbl. 22". Barrel is marked at rear w/ "VP" proof & eagle head acceptance mark. Marked on top w/ "A". Buckhorn rear sight. Sight base & ladder marked "C". Blade front sight. Low arch 1884 dated breech block. Lock has flush lockplate. Three click tumbler. Is marked on the outside w/ the spread winged eagle & "U.S. / SPRINGFIELD". Walnut stock equipped on left side w/ saddle bar & ring. Buttplate has swinging trap to hold cleaning rod which is not present. Two piece trigger guard. Barrel band retained by spring. CONDITION: stock has arsenal rework type finish rendering markings very faint, but w/ only slight loss of wood in inletted areas. Metal retains 50% original blue w/ thinning & wear. Rear sight ladder spring is broken. Extractor spring is also broken & does not allow the usual snapping action. Bore has shine w/ strong sharp lands, but areas of light frosting & pitting throughout.
